Last week, the Dow Jones Index was on a strong upward trend as it approached its record high. The Dow Jones Index has been rising for six days in a row and currently trades at $44,828, just a few percentage points off its record high of $45,045. Over 22% of its value has been gained since April’s lowest point.
The Dow Jones Index is a top-performing index this week. The factors discussed here will have an impact on other American indices such as S&P 500, Nasdaq100 and the blue chip S&P 500.
Trade war deadline
Donald Trump’s upcoming deadline for a trade war is the first catalyst that will have a major impact on the Dow Jones Index. The deadline for Donald Trump’s trade war, set to end on Monday, is likely to bring back the tensions in the market that had faded over the past few months.
Trump’s trade agreements are limited to a handful of countries like China, Vietnam and the United Kingdom. The talks with major economies such as the European Union (EU), Japan and South Korea, haven’t progressed in recent months.
Trump’s most important warning is that the tariffs on European Union products could increase to 50 percent if no agreement can be reached.
The US stock market is therefore going to react to the outcome of these trade negotiations. A return to the trade war could lead to an immediate reversal in the Dow Jones index and others. As we have seen with the trade deal on Vietnam, it will boost the Dow Jones index.
Earnings of corporations
Earnings by notable American corporations are another major catalyst. The earnings are expected to be released a week prior to the beginning of earnings season. This will make it a key time for investors due the impact of tade.
Delta Aie Lines is the most prominent company to release its earnings. Conagra Brands follows closely behind, followed by Levi Strauss and Wipro. These companies, which aren’t part of Dow Jones but will still have a significant impact on the economy in the current tariff-era, will give us more insight into the economic state.
Minutes of the FOMC
Minutes of the Federal Open Market Committee’s (FOMC) last meeting will also be a major catalyst for Dow Jones. The minutes of the meeting, due out Wednesday, provide additional information.
They will also provide more information on the future rate reductions and what is expected at the next meeting. The Dow Jones will not be affected by the minutes as they usually are because the latest nonfarm payrolls data (NFP).
Data showed the economy adding over 147,000 new jobs, while the unemployment rate fell to 4,1%. These numbers show that the economy has been doing well and that there is no need to cut interest rates this month.
The majority of analysts now predict that the Fed is going to start reducing rates at its meeting in July.
