A scam involving ATMs has apparently robbed elderly clients of some of the largest banks in America of tens and thousands of dollars.
The New York Post reports that the New York City Police is warning seniors to watch out for three scammers who have been committing crimes at ATMs since a spree of crime between May and Juni.
The group, consisting of two women and a man, is said to be acting as good Samaritans and offering to assist the elderly to use an ATM. They may also strike up conversation to distract them in order to steal their cards.
The police say the three stole $25,000 from a woman aged 90 and $3,000 from 83 in separate incidents just an hour apart on the 14th of May.
The thieves began a conversation on June 2nd with a man aged 71 while withdrawing money from a Chase Bank machine. The scammer took the victim’s card while he was distracted and then linked up with a second man in a Chase Bank ATM where they attempted to withdraw $5,500.
A 71-year old man claims that scammers have charged his account $6,000 in less than an hour.
On June 19, thieves targeted a 86-year old woman, stealing $24,000.
The police claim that the trio stole at least $70,00 from older victims.
Between May 8th to June 26th, authorities say, nine thefts of seniors from Chase Bank, Bank of America and Citibank branches in New York have been reported.
