Unknown to many, a US healthcare company has just revealed a cyber-attack that could have exposed the personal data of up to tens thousands of Americans.

According to a recent filing made with the Office of the Maine attorney general, the Ohio-based Counseling Center of Wayne Counties claims that 83 354 people have been affected by a breach of the network.

According to the center, an “unauthorized entity”, may have accessed their system, and stolen medical and personal data, including names, dates-of-birth, Social Security Numbers, drivers’ license numbers or state ID numbers, information about health insurance, information on medical conditions, names of treatment providers, medical records numbers, information regarding treatment costs, and information concerning diagnosis and treatment.

On March 3, 2025 we received a suspicious alert from our third party service provider following a system disruption. We immediately launched an internal investigation and took steps to detect, stop, and deal with any unauthorised activity.

“We removed all systems that we thought were affected, reset the account passwords, and enlisted leading privacy and data security professionals to help us conduct a comprehensive forensic investigation.”

The Counseling Center for Wayne and Holmes Counties provides behavioral health services that focus on mental wellness, counseling, and other support services.

According to the organization, it sent out notification letters abruptly to those affected. It also urged victims to review their account statements to look for fraud or identity theft.

The center has not seen any evidence to date that the personal information of a victim has been misused for fraud or identity theft.
