Tens of thousands Americans have had their sensitive personal data compromised by a cybersecurity incident, making them vulnerable to identity theft or fraud.
The City of Sheboygan in Wisconsin has filed a complaint with the Office of the Maine attorney general claiming to have discovered an important breach that affects 67,947 Americans.
Constangy, Brooks, Smith and Prophete, LLP, the law firm that represents the Sheboygan City Government, claims “data on a portion of the network could have been accessed without authorization.”
A city investigation has revealed that personal data of individuals, such as names, dates, Social Security Numbers, vehicle or license plate numbers and driver’s license numbers or state identification numbers may have been taken.
On October 31st, 2024 the city was affected by an encryption incident that caused a disruption in its network. After discovering the event, they took immediate steps to protect their digital environment. The company also hired a firm that specializes in digital forensics to investigate the incident and determine if any data was affected.
After a thorough and comprehensive review of all the data, on May 14th 2025 the city discovered that the personal information of certain individuals was compromised by the incident.
According to the law firm, letters were sent out to all those who were affected informing them of the breach. They also offered free services for identity protection to victims whose Social Security number was stolen.
The law firm claims that the Sheboygan City Government is presently implementing enhanced data security protocols in order to reduce the risks of another breach.
