Hackers breached a system of an entity related to the government that handled sensitive personal data, placing the information of 478,188 Americans in danger.
According to an updated notification sent by the Maine Attorney-General’s Office, the incident that occurred at Brittany N. Griffiths was in Illinois in May last year.
The firm concluded after a week-long investigation that an external intrusion, which is commonly referred to as a “hacking” incident, compromised a dataset that could include the full names, contacts and personal identifiers of nearly half amillion individuals in the US.
More than 284,000 Maine residents were affected, which triggered the state’s reporting obligation under laws governing data breaches.
As required by Maine law, once the company and regulators were notified about the breach, they began sending breach notifications to the affected customers. The notices usually advise the recipients to be proactive by placing fraud alerts at major credit bureaus and freezing credit records, enrolling for any identity protection or credit monitoring services, and carefully scrutinizing their financial and healthcare account accounts.
Lawyers have already begun to inform individuals who’ve had their data compromised of the legal options available. They highlight the potential for compensation in relation to identity protection, credit monitoring, and any other costs incurred as a result.
