In a cyber-attack, hackers may have compromised the personal data of at least 113 232 Americans.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reported that the Richmond Behavioral Health Authority’s (RBHA) breach was a “Hacking/IT incident” and affected more than 113,000 people. RBHA was attacked in late September 2025 and its network server compromised.

Hackers gained access to the network on September 30 2025 and ransomware was used, which encrypted parts of the system. RBHA then terminated their access.

The official breach notification from RBHA states that there are currently no “definitive proof” of personal data being viewed or mishandled. However, the organization has notified the affected individuals to be on the safe side because it is possible the intrusion exposed protected health information.

The data that could be accessed includes names and surnames, Social Security Numbers, passport numbers and financial information. These are all classified as protected and personal health information by federal law.

Ransomware hackers claimed to be responsible for the breach on Dark Web data leakage sites. This suggests that large volumes of information may have been leaked during this attack.

Security Week reported that a group called Qilin claimed responsibility for the attack against RBHA by adding the company to their Tor-based leak website.

RBHA hired cyber experts, launched an investigation to find out the extent of the breach and added additional security measures to its network to prevent further incidents.

Those affected are advised to keep an eye on their financial and credit accounts for any suspicious activities and take protective measures such as credit freezing or fraud alerts, while remaining informed via official notifications.
