The incident revealed deep divisions in Congress as Trump outlined his policy agenda.

While Republicans celebrated Green’s removal by chanting “Goodbye!” as he was led out, this moment highlighted ongoing political tensions around Trump’s return to the White House.

Green’s vocal opposition to Trump goes back to the first term of the former president, when he was one of the earliest legislators to call for impeachment.

Al Green’s background

Al Green, aged 77, is the US representative of Texas’ 9th district congressional district. He has held this position since 2005.

Born in New Orleans in 1939, he graduated from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law of Texas Southern University with a law degree in 1974. He then began his political career in Harris County as a justice of peace.

His tenure in Congress has been marked by his strong focus on civil and economic rights, as well as healthcare access.

Green’s conflicts with Trump are well documented. In 2017, Green was the first legislator to introduce articles of impeachment against Trump. He cited obstruction of justice in Russia investigation.

He then forced multiple House votes to impeach Trump, provoking the ire of Republican legislators and some moderate Democrats. His opposition to Trump’s policy has been a defining characteristic of his tenure in Congress.

The disruption in Congress

Green, who was seated near the aisle of the auditorium, immediately stood up and shouted “You have no mandat.”

His comments, which aimed to contest Trump’s electoral legitimacy as well as the proposed Medicaid cuts, triggered an angry response from Republican legislators.

Green was warned by House Speaker Mike Johnson to stop his outburst, or he would be removed. Johnson ordered the Sergeant of Arms to restore order after the Texas Democrat continued interjecting.

Green continued to criticize Trump’s policies as he was being escorted from the chamber.

Green defended Green’s actions by stating that Trump’s claims about a mandate are misleading and that the proposed budget will harm Americans who are vulnerable.

The moment heightened an already charged atmosphere within Congress. Members of the Democratic Women’s Caucus wore pink in protest, while others displayed messages critical of Trump’s policy.

Protests during Trump’s speech

The removal of Green was only one of many demonstrations that took place during Trump’s address. Democratic lawmakers showed their disapproval in different ways. Some wore blue and yellow ties to support Ukraine.

Other posters displayed messages accusing Elon Musk, a billionaire, of threatening Social Security. This reflected broader concerns about economic policy changes under Trump.

Several Democratic representatives revealed T-shirts bearing slogans like “Resist” or “No more Kings,” while Rashida Tlaib displayed a whiteboard with the words “THAT’S a LIE.”

The defiance displayed in the House highlighted ongoing divisions, as Trump’s policies regarding healthcare, social security and foreign relations have been met with strong opposition.

Despite repeated warnings by the Democratic leadership of the House to maintain decorum during the speech, there were multiple interruptions.

Minority Whip Katherine Clark urged members to refrain from using props. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries urged lawmakers to focus their attention on the impact of Trump’s policies, rather than make the moment about personal protests.

The charged atmosphere made it clear, however, that bipartisanship remains elusive.

Trump’s return to Congress reignited old battles. Green’s removal symbolized the animosity that still exists between the former President and his critics.

After the dust settles down, Green’s protest will likely remain a defining event in the latest chapter of Trump’s era.
