Two men in Queens have been charged by the U.S. Department of Justice with masterminding an elaborate scam to steal $120 million dollars from Medicare and Medicaid through false claims.
Inwoo Kim, Daniel Lee and their businesses (a pharmacy and 2 social adult daycares) were used to illegally pay bribes or kickbacks for elderly Medicaid and Medicare patients.
They allegedly persuaded the senior citizens to fill out unnecessary prescriptions in Kim’s pharmacies and sign up for medically unneeded services at Kim’s daycare centers. Then, they billed Medicare or Medicaid for the alleged care.
Frank T. Walsh Jr. is the acting Medicaid inspector.
“Medicaid Fraud threatens the safety and health of recipients, drains vital resources from the delivery system, and wastes tax dollars.”
“This joint effort is a message to law enforcement that Empire State will work closely together to preserve the Medicaid program’s integrity, to hold those who commit wrongdoing accountable and to conserve precious resources in health care.”
Kim and Lee were both charged with conspiring to commit fraud in the healthcare industry.
They could face 10 years of prison if convicted.
