Pinterest Inc. (NYSE:PINS) fell more than 20 percent this morning, after it reported a disappointing Q4 and provided guidance for the current quarter that indicated things won’t be improving anytime soon.
Citi analysts say that while PINS’ management has attributed a lot of its weakness to the “tariffs,” there are other factors at work here which could hinder a rapid recovery for PINS in 2026.
The investment firm has downgraded Pinterest’s stock, which had already fallen by 60% over the past few months to “neutral”, and cut its target price more than in half.
Citi agrees tariffs remain an overhang for Pinterest stock
Citi analysts agreed that Pinterest’s most loyal clients are the biggest threat, as they will be spending less on advertising due to tariffs.
In the US, Canada and Europe, retailers are cutting back on their budgets, especially for home decor and furnishings, which Pinterest heavily relies upon.
The investment firm claims that it’s not just an issue in the United States; second-order impacts have already begun to hurt Pinterest’s growth.
PINS is now trading below the major moving averages, a sign that bears have taken control. A near-term recovery is not likely.
What other factors could affect the recovery of PINS Shares?
Pinterest looks like a home that is being renovated while the owners still try to throw a party.
In January, the company began a massive sales restructuring. It had cut approximately 15% of its staff to shift towards an AI-first approach.
Citi says this poses a “significant near-term execution risk”, as it rebuilds the “go-to market” function.
The investment firm, in a research note published today, highlighted the fact that, while the layoffs had been intended to increase profitability, it has instead resulted in “meaningful disruption” for the teams responsible to court advertisers.
Relationships with brands that spend a lot of money are often affected when sales teams change. This makes it hard for PINS and Pinterest to achieve their revenue targets during the transition phase.
AI disruption fears remain an overhang for Pinterest
Citi analysts cite the rapid evolution of AI as the greatest existential risk.
As giants such as Google and Meta incorporate sophisticated shopping tools into their search engines and chatbots, AI-related disruption concerns are increasing.
OpenAI’s advertising tools are a growing concern, as they begin to drain marketing budgets through highly conversational and intent-driven experiences.
Citi is concerned that Pinterest’s visual discovery models – once its biggest differentiator- are being “cloned”, and even improved, by rivals with deeper pockets.
PINS faces a daunting task in defending their market share from a new wave of agentic, superior AI technology.
