After returning to Washington from Iowa for a campaign event, Trump told reporters that he spoke with Putin on the phone earlier but was disappointed by his outcome.
Trump stated, “I am very disappointed in the conversation that I had with President Putin today because I do not believe he was there.”
“I just said I didn’t believe he was looking to stop and that is too bad.”
Trump said that during their call, he did not see any indication that Putin would be willing to end the conflict and characterized the conversation as being unproductive.
He told reporters that he had made no progress at all with the man.
Russian drones are reported to have struck Kyiv suburbs’ northern residential areas shortly after Trump and Putin exchanged words.
Officials in Ukraine have linked this attack to Moscow’s ongoing aerial campaign, which targets urban areas.
Trump speaks to German Merz
Call between Trump and Zelenskiy took place at a crucial time for Ukraine. The country is dealing with an escalating attack and uncertainty over US support.
Germany has, according to reports, entered into talks with Ukraine to purchase additional Patriot systems in order to bridge the protection gap.
The German newspaper Spiegel reported on Thursday that Trump had also spoken with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
The news outlet cited unnamed sources as saying that the two leaders had discussed the current situation in Ukraine and focused on bilateral trade, air defence systems, and a bolstering of the system.
This diplomatic engagement highlights the growing international concern over the course of the Ukraine war, which is now in its third anniversary, as well as the necessity to redouble efforts in order to reach a political solution.
The formal diplomatic talks between Washington, D.C. and Moscow have stalled despite recent efforts.
