The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF), every year, conducts a poll on the cost of a Thanksgiving meal.

The study shows that in 2024 the cost of Thanksgiving dinner will have changed dramatically. It illustrates regional differences as well as changes in food prices since the pandemic.

Costs in 2024

The average cost of Thanksgiving dinner this year is $54.33, a drop from 2023.

This price represents an $8.64 increase over the pre-pandemic average.

Certain commodities, like turkey, saw significant price increases despite a slight decrease in the total price.

Turkey is the centerpiece of every Thanksgiving meal. The average price of a Thanksgiving turkey in 2024 is expected to be $25.67. This represents a $4.87 increase over the pre-pandemic cost.

This significant rise reflects the persistent inflationary pressures that have affected food prices. These pressures affect not only poultry, but other products on tables across the country.

Costs of Thanksgiving Dinner in 2024

Thanksgiving dinner is an American cultural institution. It’s a cornucopia traditional dishes.

The cost of the holiday meal has varied this year. Some items have seen price increases, while others have seen price decreases.

The American Farm Bureau Federation’s (AFBF) annual poll highlights the varying prices of turkey, and other key ingredients. It also highlights the various variables that affect these price variations.

Bernt Nelson, AFBF economist, said that the turkey is the centerpiece of Thanksgiving dinner and the most expensive item.

The price of the turkey is declining despite being the centerpiece. This is due to a smaller American flock of turkeys, which has been “the smallest since 1985 because of avian flu.”

It’s interesting to note that a lower demand for groceries has resulted in lower prices. This is good news for families who are planning their holiday meals this year.

The Farm Bureau informal survey provided a list of essential Thanksgiving ingredients, including turkey, sweet potatoes and rolls, peas and cranberries. Also included was a vegetable tray, pumpkin pie, and whipped cream.

These goods saw a price drop, especially fresh vegetables. This reflects the overall volatility of crops.

A good weather pattern has also helped to lower the price of whole milk by over 14%.

It is important to remember that the price of milk varies significantly from state-to-state in the United States.

While some ingredients are now more affordable, others have seen a cost increase.

As an example, the price of dinner rolls and cubed filling has increased by 8% as a result of rising food processing costs and labour costs.

The cranberry price has also increased by nearly 12% in the past year despite an 18% decline expected for 2023. This suggests that the current surge will bring prices closer to historic norms.

This year, the cranberry price is the lowest it has been since 2015. It shows the complex interplay between consumer demand and supply networks as families prepare for the holidays.

Historical context: from pandemic prices up to the present

In 2024 the average price for Thanksgiving dinner will drop again, but it will not offset the price increases that were recorded during the years of the epidemic.

The average cost of Thanksgiving lunch has increased between 2020 and 2022 from $46.90 up to $64.05. This is mainly due to rising farm costs and inflation.

These historical data show the continuing volatility of food costs and the long-term impact the pandemic had on consumer prices.

Price variations across regions

The AFBF survey reveals that Thanksgiving dinner costs vary greatly by region in the United States.

A typical dinner in the South costs $56.81 while the West is the most expensive at $67.05.

Prices in different geographical areas can vary due to factors such as local agriculture, transportation and market conditions.

Understanding the financial dynamics surrounding the celebration dinner in 2024 could help families make better budgeting and purchasing decisions.

The price of turkey, for example, is still higher than the previous year despite the fact that the overall average has dropped.

As these statistics show, families should be mindful of how much they spend on this holiday.

As consumers and farmers adjust to the new landscape of food prices in the wake of economic challenges and shifts, there will be speculation about the future price trends of Thanksgiving dinner.
