Israel and Hamas reached an agreement in phases to end the Gaza war after 15 months of conflict.
This deal could result in a ceasefire by January 19th 2024. It includes provisions that include a withdrawal of Israeli troops, release of Hamas hostages, and freeing Palestinian prisoners who are held by Israel.
The negotiations, which culminated on Wednesday, lasted for several months, and key mediators including Egyptian, Qatari, and United States officials were involved.
After the announcement was made, US president Joe Biden announced the agreement, marking an important step towards peace following months of violence which has killed tens thousands of Palestinians and forced millions to flee their homes.
After months of intense diplomacy, the United States along with Egypt, Qatar and Hamas reached an agreement on a ceasefire, and the release of hostages. The United States never stopped their diplomatic efforts in order to achieve this deal. I’ll be speaking more on this shortly.
Israel and Hamas ceasefire agreement
Israeli troops will begin to withdraw from Gaza after the six-week ceasefire, according to an agreement that hasn’t been announced yet.
Israel has agreed to release Palestinians in exchange for Hamas hostages, giving hope to both families who are suffering the effects of war.
The news was welcomed by the affected communities of Gaza, even though Israel continues to airstrike the area.
In the first phase of this deal, 33 Israelis hostages will be released, including women, children and older men.
The second phase will begin on the 16th of this ceasefire. This includes the release of any remaining hostages, and the signing of a ceasefire permanent.
In the final phase, international organizations such as the United Nations will oversee the efforts to rebuild Gaza and return the dead bodies.
Qatari mediators who were instrumental in the facilitation of the deal expressed their hope that this ceasefire will promote stability in Gaza and the Middle East as a whole.
Families of Israeli hostages on the streets of Tel Aviv expressed relief and optimism.
The ceasefire was hailed by many as an important step in the right direction, but there are still political issues to be resolved.
The question of who will run Gaza after the war is a major issue.
Israel has denied any Hamas involvement, and also firmly opposed any Palestinian Authority role.
The complex dynamics of the Gaza reconstruction, as well as the immense task that lies ahead, requires cooperation among Israel, Palestinians, Arab countries, and international organisations.
This deal comes against a background of political pressure. Donald Trump, the US president-elect has signaled that he will use the ceasefire to build on the Abraham Accords – agreements which normalized Israel’s relations with multiple Arab countries under his first term.
Trump repeatedly called on the end of the war and was instrumental in moving the negotiation forward.
It is possible that the ceasefire agreement could deescalate tensions not just in Gaza but in the Middle East as a whole, since the conflict in Gaza has caused unrest throughout the region, including in Lebanon, Syria and Yemen.
As a result, the tensions have risen between Israel and Iran, raising fears of escalating regional conflicts.
International leaders hope that as the situation unfolds, this ceasefire will lead to a lasting peaceful solution.
Alexander de Croo, Belgian Premier, expressed his relief by saying, “After many months of war, we are elated for our hostages and their families as well as for Gaza’s people.” We hope that this ceasefire marks the end of the conflict and the start of lasting peace.
The road ahead is still complex. There are many issues that remain unresolved, including Gaza’s fate and the humanitarian crisis in this region.
International cooperation will be required to ensure the successful implementation of a ceasefire and efforts towards rebuilding Gaza.
