The global markets and geopolitics were the dominant themes on Friday. Asian stocks rose on the back of renewed optimism around artificial intelligence. Mitsubishi Corp., a Japanese conglomerate, made a historic US shale oil acquisition. And US President Donald Trump was in the news for his comments on Venezuela and Gaza.
Asian markets rise as AI optimism returns
The Asian stock market rose on Friday, as artificial intelligence gained momentum. Meanwhile, the US Dollar hovered at a high of six weeks following positive US economic reports that caused traders to reduce their expectations for rate cut.
The broadest MSCI index for Asia-Pacific stocks outside Japan rose 0.68%, hovering near the record set in the previous session.
The gains were driven by the strong results of Taiwanese chipset maker TSMC. This helped to revive confidence in AI stocks.
In Asian trading, Nasdaq and S&P futures both rose 0.31%.
According to a Reuters article, Tony Sycamore is a market researcher at IG.
The Nikkei 225 index in Japan was down by 0.04 percent, partly due to a stronger yen. European equity futures were also down after reaching record highs during the previous session.
Dollar stood at 99.31 in currencies against a basket. This was supported by the data that showed unexpectedly lower US unemployment claims.
Mitsubishi buys Aethon US Gas assets
Mitsubishi Corp. has agreed to buy Aethon’s US Natural Gas Production and Pipeline Assets for $5.2 Billion. The deal is valued at $7.5 Billion including the debt.
This is the biggest purchase made by a Japanese firm in the US Shale sector.
Aethon II LLC, Aethon I LP and other related companies are involved in the transaction.
Mitsubishi pays $5.2 billion to Aethon for its equity and $2.33 billion to assume the net interest bearing debt.
Mitsubishi stated that the US Gas Market is currently the largest market in terms of domestic production and demand. Further growth will be driven by increasing power requirements from AI/datacenters.
Assets are located in Haynesville Shale Basin in Texas’s eastern part and Louisiana’s northern region, close to major LNG terminals.
Mitsubishi shares fell by 2% after the announcement.
Trump receives Nobel Medal from Venezuelan Opposition Leader Machado
A White House official confirmed that Trump will keep his Nobel Peace Prize Medal, which was given to him by Venezuelan Opposition Leader Maria Corina Machado during a White House Meeting on Thursday.
Trump posted on social media: “Maria gave me her Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of the work that I’ve done.” This is a beautiful gesture of respect. “Thank you Maria!”
Machado stated that the gift was a recognition of his dedication to freedom for the Venezuelans.
Machado reached out to Trump after Trump rejected his proposal to replace Nicolas Maduro, Venezuela’s ousted leader, with Machado.
Trump publicly campaigned in favor of the award before last month’s announcement and expressed his dissatisfaction when he was passed over.
Norwegian Nobel Institute says the award itself can’t be given away, transferred or shared.
Trump supports transitional Palestinian panel for Gaza
Trump said that he also supports the newly-appointed “Palestinian Technocratic government” in Gaza, which will govern during a fragile truce period beginning October.
Trump stated that he would support a newly-appointed Palestinian Technocratic Government (the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza), supported by the Board’s High Representative to run Gaza in the transition period.
The “Board of Peace” international, which he preside over, will oversee the mediation process as the mediators try to negotiate ceasefire issues, disarmament and future governance in the midst of ongoing tensions.
Israel and Hamas, a militant Palestinian group, approved Trump’s proposal in October. Under the plan, a Palestinian “Technocrat Authority” would be operating under an international “Board of Peace” tasked to supervise Gaza’s management during a phase of transition.
Washington and its mediators face complex challenges as they move into the next stage of ceasefire negotiations, such as the possible deployment of a peacekeeping international force, the additional Israeli withdrawals related to this process and the disarmament and demobilization of Hamas.
