Elon Musk will be leaving his position at the Department of Government Efficiency on Friday. This follows a turbulent four-month period marked by policy conflicts and internal strife.
Musk’s departure follows the wave of resignations at DOGE, a controversial White House initiative to reduce federal spending.
According to sources, senior officials, including Steve Davis (president of Musk’s Boring Company) and Katie Miller, DOGE spokesperson, have left or recently left the agency.
James Burnham, the Attorney General of Massachusetts is expected to leave as well.
Musk became a special government employee in the Trump Administration after having contributed over $250,000,000 to President Trump’s campaign for reelection.
Musk was a high-profile temporary appointment with unusual influence.
Musk and Trump are on good terms?
Musk has been a consistent praiser of President Trump. He posted on Truth Social, Thursday, that “This is his last day but it’s not really because he will always be here, helping us all the way.” Elon is fantastic!”
Musk, however, hasn’t always returned the compliments.
He called White House Trade Advisor Peter Navarro a “moron”, and a “sack of bricks” for his tariff policy.
Musk has recently broken with Trump on the proposed spending package of the President, calling it fiscally reckless.
In an interview on CBS’ , Sunday Morning, Musk stated that “it undermines the DOGE team’s work.”
DOGE fails to meet lofty goals
Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (which he claimed would reduce federal expenditures by trillions) has failed to meet this benchmark.
The agency has been questioned about its self-reported saving figures, but the impact is still unclear.
Musk was optimistic this week. He wrote on X, “The @DOGE Mission will only grow over time, as it becomes a part of everyday life in the entire government.”
As the time I was scheduled to serve as Special Government Employee ends, I want to thank President Donald Trump for giving me this opportunity to cut wasteful expenditures. As it is adopted by all government departments, the @DOGE’s mission will become stronger over time.
Musk’s participation in the government comes at a price.
Tesla’s image is suffering, as vandals have targeted showrooms and vehicles. This has been a result of political pressure.
Musk, who was once omnipresent within Trump’s orbit and attended all of his public appearances in the final weeks, has become increasingly scarce.
Since then, he has signaled his intention to withdraw from politics in order to focus on private sector ventures.
Musk’s sources said that this includes the suspension of future contributions to political parties.
