Wyoming Bank Shuts Down Systems, Limits Account Access After Cybersecurity Incident

A Wyoming bank is closing all branches and disconnecting internal systems to isolate a cybersecurity incident.

Hilltop Bank says its IT systems began degrading on Tuesday, prompting an investigation and full shutdown of online, mobile and phone services as a precaution.

Branches remain closed with no projected restoration time, though debit cards continue to function with a combined $1,000 daily limit at stores and ATMs.

Automatic payments scheduled through the bank will not process, but lender-pulled payments may still occur.

The bank has notified the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Federal Reserve Bank in Kansas City.

All accounts remain FDIC-insured, and Hilltop Bank will reimburse any late fees or penalties caused by the outage.

Hilltop Bank addressed the matter on its updates site.

“On Tuesday, September 8, Hilltop Bank’s IT systems started to degrade, which limited the bank’s ability to conduct some routine transactions. Overnight, our IT team discovered that this was a cyber security incident. As a precaution we have taken all bank systems offline.”

The bank adds that it has procedures in place to make customers whole.

“This is an IT system issue. We have procedures, plans, and policies in place to make all customers whole, should we need to. All accounts are also insured by the FDIC up to the established limits.”
