A large national bank has accused an associate banker of taking hundreds of thousands in just two months from their customers.

Sixto Christopher porras, according to the Northern District of California’s U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Francisco, allegedly stole $440,000 while stationed at two retail banks.

Porras was able to drain bank accounts in each case using existing debit cards and replacements.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California, the first incident happened in August 2023 when a client walked into a bank to make a wire transaction.

Porras was able to obtain the personal identification number (PIN) associated with the debit card of the customer as the transfer proceeded. Porras, unbeknownst of the customer kept his debit card. Porras is accused of using the debit card in order to steal approximately $100,000.

A month or so later, the second incident occurred.

In or around September 2023 another customer of a retail bank visited the branch in order to report a fraud. Porras obtained the PIN for the debit card of the customer as he assisted him. Porras caused the debit card of the customer to be issued and sent to Porras San Francisco home. Porras is accused of using the debit card in order to steal approximately $340,000 (USD) from the account.

Porras is facing embezzlement charges and fraud involving access devices. Porras no longer has a job with this bank. Porras, if found guilty of embezzlement charges, could face up to 30 year prison sentences and fines as high as $1 million. If convicted, the access device fraud charges can carry a maximum 15-year prison sentence and fine of $250,000.
