According to reports, a woman from Florida has filed a lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase for stealing over $1,000,000 out of her account.
The Sun reports that Olga Ponorovsky, aged 80, claims the bank did not protect her or her money when she was a victim of an investment fraud.
Ponorovsky is a retired engineer who first encountered the scam when she saw a legitimate advertisement in September 2023.
Under the pretense of promised rewards, con artists persuaded her to complete 30 different transitions in five months for a total of $1.3million. She received no money.
Ponorvosky claims that the bank did not take any action after marking the large withdrawals made in person as “suspicious”.
The bank also failed to notify the Central Abuse Hotline in Florida, as required by law.
According to the report, Florida lawyer Robert W. Georges stated this.
Florida is one of the few states that have passed specific laws against financial scams. Banks have an ethical and legal obligation to adhere strictly to these laws in order to protect their elderly customers from financial ruin.
Chase filed a motion for dismissal of the case, asserting that Ponorovsky had made her transactions out-of-her own will.
