Businesses protest against the continuation of Trump’s policies.
Reports claim that President Donald Trump’s inconsistent tariff regime has caused confusion in the US trade. The administration claims that its trade policy remains unchanged despite the Supreme Court ruling, which struck down Trump’s duties. It has added a 15% global tariff.
The Court’s ruling has not been implemented by the Government
It is important to note that US Customs and Border Protection has not updated its systems in order to comply with the Supreme Court judgment, which stated that the president does not have the legal authority to impose import tariffs.
The US Trade Ecosystem is Complicated
The US generated billions from Trump’s tariff implementation. The duties were embedded directly into CBP’s systems. Those duties were also embedded into the cargo-tracking and tariff-classification tools deployed at ports of entry across the US borders.
The Supreme Court’s ruling, that the IEEPA doesn’t give the president the authority to install tariffs, automatically removed the legal basis of those duties. The ongoing confusion has complicated certain processes, especially for importers who have experienced shipment delays and may be paying invalid duties.
Trade Bodies State their Position
Several businesses have already begun to file protests and correct entries with US Customs. Others are waiting for updates in tariff codes before they move their goods. Trade bodies expect that the US CBP will act quickly to avoid further delays in supply chain, which could cause products to arrive late.
According to stakeholders, governments need to invest time in adjusting their technologies and systems so that they can accommodate court decisions.
