JPMorgan Chase accused a client of fraud when he attempted to deposit an legitimate check for his father who died in the 9/11 attacks.
Malik Washington, 28, a New Yorker, went to the Chase branch in New York on the 9th of January, News 12 reports.
The money came from the annuity that his mother Kiesha Washington set up after her father’s death on 9/11 for their children.
Washington claims he has successfully deposited checks of the same type at this bank in the past. This time the staff was suspicious and marked it as fraud.
Chase withheld funds despite the fact that he claims the check cleared on the following day.
Washington received the payment after waiting more than two-weeks.
Chase closed his account as well as that of his mother Kiesha without explanation.
A Chase spokesperson released a statement after the station started investigating the incident without commenting on the closures of the accounts.
