According to a recent report, illicit crypto assets inflows reached a record of $158 billion.

TRM Labs says that the inflows are up 145% from 64.5 billion dollars in 2024. This represents a reversal of a decline over a period of several years and the highest in five-years.

Ransomware and fraud were also at record levels.

“Despite an increase in the absolute volume of illicit crypto, the illicit volume proportionally to total crypto volume dropped in 2025 from 1,3% in 2024, down to 1.2%.

Although illicit activity only represented a tiny share of the overall volume on the blockchain, in 2025 illicit entities will capture 2.7% of all available cryptoliquidity, using a measure that frames risks relative to deployed capital, rather than just raw transaction volume.”

The volume of sanctions was driven by Russian transactions. In total, the volume of sanctioned stablecoins A7A5 pegged to rubles accounted for over $72 billion.

TRM Labs reports that China is playing an increasingly important role in illegal crypto transactions.

“This sustained growth is a reflection of the growing reliance on crypto-based escrow services by a variety of illicit actors in the APAC Region, such as scam networks, cybercrime group, and intermediaries for sanctions evasion.”
