According to French authorities, the recent spate of crypto-kidnappings in France is linked to foreign organizers.
Franceinfo, a French media outlet, viewed an internal report of the Organized Crime Information, Intelligence and Strategic Analysis Service of the Judicial Police. The confidential document indicated that more than forty crypto-linked kidnappings occurred in France from July 2023 to the end of the year 2025.
This is often done by foreign organizers who work with French recruiters. The recruiters connect the organizers to young criminals who use online threats and violence.
These kidnappers are typically men aged between 20-35 who work in the digital asset industry as entrepreneurs, investors or influencers.
Social media allows kidnappers and their targets to track the victims’ routines, as well as those of their families.
According to CertiK, physical attacks on crypto owners are now “a structural threat” to digital assets ownership.
In a recent report, the firm noted that in 2017, there was a 75% increase in “wrench” attacks, where criminals use violence, intimidation or confinement as a means to force crypto holders to divulge their passwords or private keys.
CertiK recorded 71 incidents that cost more than $40,9 million. This is a 44 percent increase year over year.
The most common wrench attack is kidnapping, but the firm’s blockchain-based security system also noted that assaults increased by 250% in the past year. This indicates “a clear increase in brutality.”
