Brazil deepens blockchain adoption as stablecoins evolve into core payment infrastructure.
Brazil’s foreign currency banking sector is moving further into blockchain-based financial services. Banco Braza is one of Brazil’s largest FX banks. It has launched its Brazilian Real-backed stablecoin BBRL on Polygon. This brings the digital real onto a faster, lower-cost blockchain.
Sandeep Nailwal, co-founder of Polygon, said that the move was another step towards moving payments and financial activities fully on-chain.
Regulated Real on Blockchain
BBRL is a digital coin pegged 1:1 with the Brazilian Real. Each token is backed by off-chain fiat reserves, ensuring that its value remains aligned with national currency.
Importantly, it is important that the stablecoins are audited and issued from an institution regulated under the Central Bank of Brazil. This means that it is part of the formal financial system in Brazil, and not outside.
Unlike volatile cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, BBRL was designed for everyday financial usage. It focuses more on business transactions, cross-border transfers and payments than on speculation.
Brazil has launched a regulated stablecoin backed by real assets, further connecting traditional banking to blockchain technology. This is done in a structured way.
Why Polygon?
The integration brings BBRL into Polygon, a blockchain network that is known for its lower fees and faster transaction speeds than many other main blockchains.
Individuals can benefit from faster and cheaper transfers. Businesses, particularly those that handle cross-border payments can benefit from this more efficient alternative.
Polygon’s partnership with the blockchain app developer will strengthen its role in developing payment-focused apps, especially for emerging markets. Polygon Labs CEO Marc Boiron said that fiat-backed, stablecoins have become essential infrastructure for global commerce.
BBRL is aligned with the trend of regulated digital currency running on public blockchains.
Braza Group’s long-term strategy
Grupo Braza announced the expansion, a company specializing in digital finance and foreign currency services.
Andre Zachary is the group’s director of crypto. The long-term goal, according to Zachary, is to connect the digital Brazilian Real to major blockchain networks, and to gradually move more foreign currency activity onto the chain.
BBRL is available to both institutional and retail users since 2025. It has so far mainly supported international transfers and investment transactions.
BBRL no longer has to be limited to a single blockchain. It has now improved interoperability and liquidity potential for on-chain financing.
Brazil’s Crypto-Friendly environment
In recent years, Brazil’s crypto regulations have become more clear. This has allowed banks to test blockchain products under regulatory supervision. This clarity has reduced the uncertainty while still encouraging innovation.
Brazil is now one of Latin America’s most structured crypto markets. Traditional financial institutions are more comfortable launching digital assets.
