BNB Chain successfully activated the Fermi hardfork on the BNB Smart Chain mainnet. This is a major upgrade that reduces the block time from 0.75 seconds down to 0.45 seconds, and brings the network some of its fastest speeds ever.
Nina Rong shared some statistics on X. She said that BSC processed 4,15 billion transactions last year. Fermi could save more than 1.24 billion seconds of total block time if the same number of transactions were to occur this year. This is equivalent to 39.5 years’ worth of block production.
Changpeng “CZ Zhao”, the co-founder Binance, commented on this announcement with a simple “Continue To Build” .
What the Fermi Hard Fork actually changes
According to the official BNB Chain Blog post, Fermi is a part of the network’s 2026 technology road map and builds on previous performance upgrades (such Pascal and Maxwell).
The main technical improvements include a shorter block production time. Faster blocks mean faster transaction confirmations for both users and decentralized apps.
A second improvement is the reliability of confirmations. The enhanced rules for block validity ensure that the network is stable even with faster blocks and that transactions are securely completed.
The upgrade is also useful for applications that require instant responses, such as high-speed DeFi Trading, live gaming on blockchains, and interactive crypto wallets.
These changes will make the network more reliable and faster for everyone, while also making it more efficient. This will pave the way for increased activity in 2026.

BNB Chain is one of the fastest Ethereum-compatible networks
BNB Chain focused heavily on improving its speed, efficiency, and compatibility with Ethereum-based applications last year. The Fermi upgrade has achieved its goal of creating blocks that are extremely fast, making BNB Chain the fastest Ethereum-compatible network. New blocks are generated in less than a half second.
This improvement comes as BNB Chain handles huge volumes of transactions. These are powered by popular DeFi applications, memecoins and heavy trading.
The faster block times will mean less waiting for developers and users. They will also experience smoother decentralized apps. These benefits become more important as blockchain apps become more interactive and time-sensitive.
