Banks Lose Over $1,800,000 to Forged Treasury Checks in Alabama and Mississippi Scheme

Banks in Alabama and Mississippi have lost more than $1.8 million after forged U.S. Treasury checks entered their systems in a coordinated fraud operation.

A Sumter County resident received a 60-month prison term along with a $25,000 fine following his guilty plea to conspiracy and bank fraud charges, reports WVUA23.

The individual directed the effort by recruiting participants and providing training on how to deposit and cash the fraudulent instruments during a four-month period in 2023.

Authorities detected the activity after a bank in Tuscaloosa flagged checks bearing fake endorsements.

U.S. Attorney Phillip W. Williams Jr. described the fraud as harmful because it drains federal resources while damaging trust in financial institutions.

Officers stopped a vehicle in Madison, Mississippi, and discovered nearly $12,000 in cash along with fake identification documents and mismatched bank cards.

Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration agents worked with state officials and local police to build the case against those involved.

Special Agent in Charge Joel Weaver emphasized that investigators target anyone who tries to misuse refund checks intended for taxpayers.

The scheme highlighted vulnerabilities in check processing that can affect both government payouts and banking security nationwide.
