Nearly half the Americans report that basic needs such as housing, utilities and health care, transportation, groceries, housing and other necessities are difficult to pay for.
Public First conducted a new POLITICO poll that found affordability is affecting daily spending and financial decisions over the long term.
Over a quarter (27%) of respondents said that they had skipped medical checks in the last two years due to cost-related concerns. 23% also said they missed a prescribed dose.
The rising costs also limit discretionary expenditure. 37 percent of respondents said that they couldn’t afford to go with friends or family to a sporting event, while 46% stated that air travel was not affordable for vacations.
Half of the respondents said that they could not afford groceries. Housing costs were a close second, surpassing concerns over health care, utilities, and transportation. The third most important concern was health care.
Results highlight the political challenges facing President Donald Trump, and Republicans in 2026. While Trump claims that prices will be coming down in the near future, most respondents, including over one-fifth his voters, blame his administration for rising grocery costs.
This poll showed that the Republican base is divided on topics such as housing, health care and tariffs. It also highlighted how voter anxiety about economic issues continues to influence their sentiment.
