Tens of millions rely on a payment system that is targeted by a new Android trojan. The malware uses both human and AI agents to steal money from the victims.
Zimperium reports that the PixRevolution malware targets Brazilian PIX users by surveilling and draining funds as soon as they make a transaction.
According to Zimperium’s PixRevolution malware, the banking malware drains money in a five step process. This includes watching for victims who initiate PIX payment.
Upon detecting a PIX transaction imminent, the malware alerts its command-and-control server. This then informs an AI agent or human to begin watching the screen of the victim in real time. The agent then sends an order to change the recipient of the funds to the attacker’s account.
Zimperium claims that most victims are unaware of anything abnormal as the banking application performs normally and that they get all confirmations needed to determine that there was a successful transfer. Zimperium says that it’s only after the fact that victims discover that money has been sent to the incorrect recipient.
The PIX system is used to process over 3 billion transactions per month, and has more than 150 millions registered users.
Santander Brasil Banco do Brasil Nubank are some of the financial institutions the PixRevolution malware targets. Berkshire Hathaway – the investment conglomerate linked to legendary investor Warren Buffett – invested $0.5billion in Nubank by 2021.
