Vanda Pharmaceuticals’ (NASDAQ:VNDA) shares opened 45% higher after the biotech company announced that the FDA had approved its treatment for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
BYSANTI’s (milsaperidone), announcement comes as a relief to VNDA, which has been struggling this year due to “disappointing Q4 earnings” against the backdrop of clinical uncertainties.
While the status of “New Chemical Entity (NCE),” and the patent protection that extends through 2044, offer long-term opportunities, one can question if the stock price rise at Vanda Pharmaceuticals is a sustainable trend or just a “sell the new” illusion.
VNDA may be experiencing a simple short squeeze
The 44% rise in the stock market may make for an impressive headline but the mechanics behind the move suggest that the rally is more driven by desperation on the part of the technical team than a fundamental change.
Vanda Pharmaceuticals, before the BYSANTI landmark was reached, was a penny stock – or at least to institutional investors. It had an alarmingly high short interest of more than 3.2 millions shares.
The sudden surge of good news “forced”, short-sellers to seek an exit. This is a classic example of a short squeeze.
They are notoriously fragile because they often come from the forced closure of bearish trades, rather than a long-term conviction to “buy and keep”.
VNDA’s stock is at risk of a “mean-reversion” as the pressure on the market eases. Retail investors will be left with a cooling asset, having “caught the green”.
BYSANTI’s approval is redundant rather than innovative
BYSANTI’s “innovation” may be overhyped.
BYSANTI is based on “iloperidone”, the active ingredient in Vanda’s current drug Fanapt. In fact, milsaperidone rapidly converts into iloperidone once ingested.
The NCE status may provide a new patent moat up to 2044 but the reality of the situation is that BYSANTI resembles a long-established drug.
Insurance payers have become increasingly resistant to “new” high-priced versions of established therapies.
Vanda Pharmaceuticals faces a steep uphill climb to prove that BYSANTI is clinically different enough to warrant premium pricing, and thus gain meaningful market shares.
Vanda Pharmaceuticals Stock: How to Play it at Current Levels
It’s worth noting that Vanda’s financial situation remains “a serious concern”.
The company posted a shocking net loss for the fourth quarter in 2025. This was despite a -44% EPS shock.
The company’s total revenues are showing signs of stagnation. It also had to take a non-cash charge in the amount of $113.7 millions for tax assets valuation allowances.
In 2026, the NCE status will not protect BYSANTI-Vanda Pharmaceuticals Inc.’s legacy products from the “patent-cliff”, which is currently devastating the small-molecule industry.
The company’s cash reserves have decreased by more than $100 million over the last year. This may force the company to “force” shareholders to dilute their shares through a secondary offer to finance the commercial launch in Q3 2026. Therefore, new investors should avoid the VNDA stock price at this time as it is a risky entry level.
The following post Vanda Pharmaceuticals’ explosive stock rally could be hype rather than substance and may change as the updates unfold.
