Tesla stock faces earnings test as Cathie Wood makes stunning $5,000 prediction

Tesla faces a closely watched earnings test on Wednesday, two days after Cathie Wood’s ARK Invest published a forecast placing the electric-vehicle maker’s shares as high as $5,000 by 2031.

ARK’s new model sets a $4,400 base-case price, nearly 12 times Tesla’s roughly $374 closing price on Tuesday, and a $5,000 bull case.

The extraordinary projections rest chiefly on robotaxis and humanoid robots, not conventional vehicle sales.

Wall Street is expecting thin margins and heavy investment. Wednesday’s results will test whether Tesla’s existing businesses can finance the transformation ARK envisages.

Tesla earnings forecast: Spending plans under scrutiny

Tesla’s company-compiled analyst consensus calls for third-quarter revenue of $28.34 billion and adjusted earnings of 45 cents per share, alongside a 17.9% gross margin.

Analysts expect capital expenditure of $7.77 billion and negative free cash flow of $4.51 billion, reflecting the cost of expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure and robotics.

Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles during the quarter, ahead of forecasts. However, deliveries alone do not establish whether pricing, operating costs and spending have improved.

Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Andres Sheppard raised his revenue estimate to $27.9 billion, while maintaining an Overweight rating and $485 price target.

Sheppard expects a 17.1% gross margin, below consensus, despite forecasting adjusted earnings of 47 cents per share.

Even that bullish recommendation sits far below ARK’s long-term targets. Investors will be watching margins and cash flow as closely as deliveries.

ARK’s robotaxi vision demands enormous investment

The heart of ARK’s valuation is an autonomous transport business vastly larger than anything Tesla operates today.

Its base case assumes 8.1 million robotaxis generating $753 billion in annual net ride-hailing revenue by 2031. Optimus humanoid robots would contribute another $212 billion.

ARK expects robotaxis to account for about 80% of Tesla’s enterprise value. It also models cumulative AI infrastructure spending reaching $225 billion by 2031, compared with roughly $7 billion through December 2025.

Those figures are ARK’s assumptions, not confirmed orders or Tesla spending commitments. Scaling such businesses would require substantial capital before their profitability is proven.

Louis Navellier of Navellier & Associates argued in an Investing.com analysis on Tuesday that Tesla needed stronger guidance on sales, margins and when Optimus might become profitable.

“I suspect that the Optimus details will remain a mystery,” he wrote, warning that the stock could struggle despite upbeat guidance.

That leaves Wednesday’s financial results carrying a different burden from ARK’s projections: demonstrating that Tesla can fund future growth without eroding current returns.

SpaceX merger talks add uncertainty

Tesla investors also have another development to assess. On Tuesday, Elon Musk said Tesla and SpaceX had formed committees of independent directors to examine a possible merger.

Musk welcomed the idea but said no deal was certain. He acknowledged that winning approval from Tesla shareholders would be a significant hurdle.

Gene Munster of Deepwater Asset Management was more confident. “Believe me, shareholders would support this,” he wrote on X, putting the chance of a merger within two years at 95%.

A combination could unite Tesla’s robotics capabilities with SpaceX’s AI computing ambitions, but would also raise questions about funding, valuation and governance.

Importantly, ARK’s $4,400 base case and $5,000 bull case value Tesla independently, neither assumes a merger.
