Since their introduction, large language models are widely used. But new research reveals how deeply they have become embedded in everyday life.
The National Bureau of Economic Research released a working paper this week, which was led by OpenAI’s Economic Research team, and Harvard economist David Deming. It analysed 1,5 million ChatGPT discussions.
The study found that the personal use of ChatGPT had overtaken professional activities, and 73% of messages were sent outside of work in June 2025, up from just 53% one year ago.
These findings show how AI is moving from the office to people’s everyday lives around the world.
AI is now used by 73% of non-workers
This study looked at messages that consumers sent through ChatGPT about their plans.
The results showed that the personal use of chatbots is now dominant, with more and more people turning to them for daily guidance, tutoring advice, tips on how-to, problem solving, creativity, or creative ideas.
Nearly three quarters of interactions in June were non-work related.
Writing remained the top task at work. It accounted for 40 percent of all workplace usage.
ChatGPT was asked to translate, edit or critique existing material in two-thirds (66%) of the writing messages.
ChatGPT is a tool that helps people to learn how to communicate better.
However, in the workplace, 56% was classified as “Doing,” showing workers depend on chatbots to complete tasks.
ChatGPT was able to support employers in highlighting the importance of writing skills.
ChatGPT is now available to 10% of adult adults worldwide
Researchers noted that around 10 percent of adults in the world will be using ChatGPT by 2025.
The tool is becoming increasingly popular across all genders and geographical regions.
By mid-2025 this gap was significantly narrowed, and matched the global adult demographics.
In lower and middle income countries, adoption rates were also higher.
By May 2025, the growth rates of the nations with the lowest incomes will be four times higher than those of the countries with the highest incomes.
The trend indicates that AI is becoming more widely used in areas other than wealthy ones.
OpenAI’s global expansion reflects both the growth of its user base and an expanded access.
Google and xAI are a growing competitor
ChatGPT is facing strong competition despite its wide adoption.
Google Gemini is growing rapidly. In August 2025 its “Nano Banana”, image editing model will propel Gemini over ChatGPT to the top spot in Apple’s App store for free applications.
Elon Musk’s xAI also aims to increase its market share.
Although it is not peer reviewed, the study that was published last week has been described as “a privacy-preserving analysis”.
This report provides one of the best insights on how ChatGPT is being used at large scale. It shows how it has become a part of both personal and professional routines.
The study findings may change as the post is updated.
