British supermarket J Sainsbury has been in talks with Chinese online giant JD.com regarding a possible sale of Argos General merchandise.
Sainsbury’s confirmed the talks on Saturday. They come nearly a decade after Sainsbury’s acquired Argos in 2016 for PS1.4billion.
Although no deal has yet been struck, it would be a huge shift in Sainsbury’s strategy. It would also give JD.com an important foothold on the UK retail sector.
There are discussions underway, but there is no guarantee of a deal
Sainsbury’s stated that it is in talks with JD.com but that there are no guarantees that the transaction will go through.
JD.com has also stated that it will be a part of any agreement with Argos, including its customers, partners, employees and other stakeholders.
Sainsbury’s said that the sale of Argos could “accelerate its transformation”, with JD.com bringing “world-class expertise in retail, technology and logistical services” to Argos.
Argos could benefit from such expertise by improving customer service and driving growth.
According to reports, the two parties have been discussing the matter for several months. Sainsbury’s has even set up a team dedicated to exploring the potential deal.
It has also changed the management structure to separate Argos’ operations. This could ease a possible transfer of ownership.
Argos has recently made changes, including a transformation team that reports directly to the managing director of Argos.
Performance and value of Argos
Argos, the UK’s second largest general merchandise retailer, operates the most popular retail website in the country.
There are over 1100 points of collection, including many in Sainsbury’s stores.
In recent years, despite these advantages, the chain struggled due to a decline in consumer confidence as well as fewer household purchases.
Sainsbury’s claimed that when it acquired Argos back in 2016, they would be able to save money, increase their product line, and reduce delivery times.
Argos has slowed down, and its latest valuation is PS344m, a sharp drop from PS1.4bn paid nearly a decade earlier.
Sainsbury’s CEO Simon Roberts acknowledged recently the negative impact on Argos of “hard, competitive market conditions”.
It has shifted more of its attention to its food division, which it believes offers greater opportunities for growth.
JD.com has a strategic interest in the UK
JD.com is one of China’s biggest retailers, with revenues of close to 160 billion dollars annually. The acquisition of Argos represents a significant step in the UK market for JD.com.
When Elliott Advisors, a private equity firm, made a bid to purchase Currys Electrical Retailers and won the competition against it.
It has also been recruiting executives from top British retailers such as Tesco, Ocado and Amazon.
Joybuy is a UK-focused brand that recently updated their website to look like Argos.
The acquisition, if successful, would bring an end to Sainsbury’s nearly 10-year ownership of Argos. JD.com will then be a major competitor in the British High Street.
As new information becomes available, this post Sainsbury’s is in discussions to sell Argos as the firm attempts to enter UK Market to China’s JD.com may change.
