Investors are closely watching Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ: NVDA), ahead of its annual GTC Conference on March 17 th.
Jensen Huang, the CEO of the AI darling, is expected to provide more information on the company’s Rubin architecture during the annual event.
Nvidia has named its new Rubin chips in honor of American astronomer Vera Rubin. Rubin’s contributions to dark matter research were significant during the 1960s.
Rubin isn’t the only chip named after a woman in science by NVDA.
Nvidia has named three more chips after women scientists
In 2004, the artificial-intelligence behemoth launched “Curie”, a GPU microarchitecture.
Nvidia’s GeForce 6 series and GeForce 7 graphic cards use the microarchitecture named for the only woman in history to win two Nobel Prizes.
Then, there was the “Ada Lovelace”, architecture launched in 2022. It is named after the revered English mathematics known for her work on Charles Babbage’s mechanical general-purpose computers.
It was used to power several of the company’s GPU series, such as the GeForce RTX 40.
The Nasdaq-listed firm also announced its Hopper Architecture in 2022. It was named after Grace Hopper. She was a pioneering computer scientists and rear admiral of the US Navy who made significant contributions to computer science and programming.
The Hopper architecture was used to power NVDA’s Tensor Core H100 GPUs.
Why is Nvidia naming convention important?
Nvidia continues to name chips after women scientists, with its upcoming Rubin Architecture, at a moment when the Trump Administration is rolling back DEI (diversity equity and inclusion) initiatives.
A study conducted last year identified the semiconductor giant as having the least diverse tech company of all the US companies, with women only holding a little more than 14% of tech roles.
Its convention of naming its chips after notable women scientists shows that it honors women in the technology industry.
Note that Nvidia’s stock is down by more than 22% from its high for the year to date ahead of the GTC conference, which will be held on March 17.
Is it worthwhile to buy NVDA shares before the GTC conference?
Wedbush analyst Dan Ives suggests buying NVDA ahead of the GTC as the annual conference could prove to be a significant catalyst for tech stocks in general.
AI stocks have been hit hard in recent weeks by tariff uncertainty and Trump’s possible policies that could push the US economy into recession.
The investment firm is still convinced that these names will continue to be bullish in the long-term.
In a recent note, he told his clients that he believes this is the third year of an 8-10-year buildout of the AI revolution.
Ives expects that tech stocks, including Nvidia, will reach a new high in the second half of 2025.
The post Nvidia chips named for women scientists may be updated as new information becomes available.
