This month the Nikkei Index maintained its bullish trend, reaching its highest point since July 10 at Y=42.030. The index has increased by more than 36% since its low in April. This article examines the key catalysts of the blue-chip Japan Index.
BoJ interest rate decision
The Bank of Japan’s interest rate announcement scheduled for Friday will likely be one of the biggest catalysts of the Nikkei index.
The bank is expected to keep interest rates at 0.5%. The bank will say that if economic conditions permit, it will increase interest rates in the second half of this year.
A week ago, the US and Japan signed a complicated trade agreement. The US tariff will apply to all Japanese imports. This will affect some top Nikkei companies, such as Toyota and Honda.
Japan also plans to invest $500 billion dollars in the United States, in areas that Donald Trump favors. This investment is not clear in the long-term.
Nikkei will react as well to the Federal Reserve’s upcoming interest rate decision. The Fed is also expected to keep rates between 4.25% and 4.45% unchanged.
Japan Earnings Season
Earnings from major Japanese companies will also be a significant catalyst for Nikkei’s 225 index. The earnings of these companies will give a better idea about Japan’s growth in earnings.
Banks from Japan will have the most impressive results. Sumitomo Mitsui Financial, Mizuo Financial and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial will release their results Thursday.
The relatively strong economy in Japan and the high interest rate have helped to boost bank stock prices this year. This is because they were all used to having negative interest rates over the past decade. Now, however, their bank raised them to 0.5%.
This week, other key Nikkei Index members like Hitachi Japan Tobacco Mitsubishi Electric Resona Holdings Itochu Mitsui and Marubeni are also expected to release their results. These three firms are noteworthy because Warren Buffett owns them.
US Corporate Earnings and Macro Data
The global stock market often responds to what is happening in the United States. This week, the top companies of Magnificent 7 like Meta Platforms and Microsoft will release their results. Over 50% of the companies that make up the S&P 500 Index are expected to release results.
The US is also releasing several important economic figures this week. On Tuesday we will have the Consumer Confidence Report, on Wednesday the GDP, on Thursday the Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE), and on Friday the Nonfarm Payrolls Data.
These numbers will be important in determining when the Fed begins to reduce interest rates.
Nikkei will react also to the deadline of August 1, when the US will implement Tariffs against most countries.
