The companies announced on Tuesday that the French startup Mistral AI, which specializes in artificial intelligence (AI), has raised EUR1.7billion ($2billion) through a round of funding led by Dutch chip maker ASML.
Mistral is now the most valuable AI firm in Europe, valued at EUR11.7 Billion.
ASML provided EUR1.3 billion in total funding, gaining an 11% share of the Paris-based firm and being seated on the strategic committee.
ASML will also become Mistral’s largest shareholder. This deal highlights the Dutch group’s efforts to increase the use of artificial intelligence within the semiconductor industry.
ASML strengthens AI partnership with strategic partner
ASML has entered into strategic partnership with Mistral AI in addition to the capital injection.
ASML has agreed to integrate Mistral AI models into its entire semiconductor manufacturing equipment, including research and development, operations, and the company’s product portfolio.
Roger Dassen will be the chief financial officer of ASML and represent it on Mistral’s strategic committee.
This move is in line with ASML’s plan to use AI for improving the precision and efficiency of tooling used for chipmaking, especially at a moment when global demand has soared.
Mistral is now in a better position to compete with US giants like OpenAI, Meta and Google, in the rapidly evolving field of generative AI.
Global investors growing in number
ASML’s support for Mistral isn’t the only prominent one. DST Global is also a participant in this round, as are Andreessen-Horowitz, Bpifrance General Catalyst Index Ventures Lightspeed and NVIDIA.
Mistral, founded in 2023 and now Europe’s leading AI competitor, has quickly gained momentum since its foundation.
In June 2023, the company was in the news when it announced a $112 million record seed round – the biggest ever raised by a European start-up valuing them at $260 millions before their first product launch.
It closed the Series A in six months, led by Andreessen-Horowitz. The valuation was $2 billion.
The subsequent raises include a $16.3M convertible investment by Microsoft early in 2024, EUR600M mix of debt and equity in June 2024 with a valuation of $6B, and the latest blockbuster, Series C.
Product and Market Impact
Mistral AI is promoting its open-source approach to generative AI in contrast with US competitors’ more closed approaches.
Le Chat was launched in 2024, and within two weeks it had over one million downloads, making France the top free iOS app ranking.
Mistral released significant updates to Le Chat in July 2025. These included a research mode with a multilingual native reasoning system, an advanced image editor, and features for project management.
It added Memories in September 2025. This allows the chatbots to remember previous conversations, which brings them closer to leading AI assistants.
ASML’s strategic partnership and investment in Mistral has placed it at the forefront of Europe’s effort to create AI champions that can compete on a worldwide scale.
