New York has just experienced one of the biggest political surprises in recent history.

Zohran Mamdani, 33, is a democratic socialist state assemblyman and former governor of New York. He defeated Andrew Cuomo, the previous Governor, in the Democratic Primary for Mayor.

Mamdani will now lead the city with the most complicated government structure in the United States.

What the public really needs to find out is whether progressive politics will deliver on their promises in government. Mamdani is the man to do it.

New York’s politics was rewritten by a stunning upset

Numbers alone can tell you a lot. Mamdani won the majority of first-choice vote in various districts, including Washington Heights, Financial District and some parts in Brooklyn. He beat Cuomo in most areas by double digits.

Cuomo had been considered invincible by New York politicians before the elections.

The man had it all: a super PAC worth $25 million, endorsements by major unions, former political opponents, and years’ of recognition.

But it was not enough. The voters, particularly the younger generation, reacted negatively to what they perceived as an attempt at a comeback based more on ego rather than vision.

Mamdani had a different strategy. Mamdani ran a ground-level, highly visible campaign, with more than 45,000 volunteers. He also used multilingual outreach and a message that focused on the cost of living.

He didn’t only talk to his usual audience. He went out to find Trump supporters and asked about their frustrations.

In order to consolidate the ranked choice votes, he formed alliances with Brad Lander and Comptroller Brad Lander.

What is Mamdani?

Mamdani’s platform combines economic redistribution and state-led investments in public services.

He has promised free childcare and free public transportation, as well as rent freezing for more than a million apartments that are regulated, along with a city-owned network of grocery stores.

In the coming decade, he also plans to build 200 000 new housing units at affordable prices.

He plans to finance these by raising taxes on New Yorkers who earn over $1,000,000 and increasing corporate tax.

This is a list of wishes that will appeal to voters who are tired of the high price of goods, stagnant salaries, and ineffective leadership of cities for decades. The appeal is not without expectations. The voters will expect results quickly.

Mamdani’s plan has universal childcare as its most promising idea. This could be estimated to cost up to $5 billion per year.

The program is expensive but could be a way to help parents with low incomes reenter into the workplace.

Mamdani and his team believe that this will have a long-term positive impact on both the families as well as the economy of the city.

Both the moderate and progressive economic base strongly support this proposal.

Some ideas are more defensible than others.

Is his plan for housing in New York a solution to the shortage?

Mamdani aims to triple the number of rent-stabilized, affordable housing units in the city. This sounds ambitious on paper.

The rate at which housing was produced in 2010 was only a little higher than 200,000 units.

His plan is centered on housing subsidies, while ignoring market rate construction.

The NYU Furman Center released a report that shows New York is building far less housing than other countries.

Rents will rise even though renters with low incomes get some relief if the total number of rental units does not increase.

Mamdani supports the freezing of rents for all stabilized apartments.

Rent control may help tenants temporarily, but it reduces incentives to create and maintain rental housing.

Rent control was found to reduce rental availability by 15%, according to a study conducted by the National Bureau of Economic Research. Rents increased across the market.

Mamdani is trying to protect his tenants. But in the process, he may have exacerbated the problem that he’s trying to fix: a lack of housing.

What makes city-owned supermarkets unlikely to succeed

Mamdani has proposed a system of public-run grocery stores.

Rent and profits are eliminated from the equation to reduce prices and combat food inflation.

Here, however, economics become murky. The margins in grocery stores are already less than 2%.

In New York’s poorer areas, the majority of food is sold by small independent businesses owned often by immigrants.

Public competitors would enter a fragile and competitive market.

Mamdani stores will likely be faced with higher costs, labor rules and delays in procurement.

The economists say that this would result in the worst possible outcome: local shops that are hurt by public stores that cannot cut their prices.

What is the reality of Mamdani’s vision?

Mamdani is a man of integrity who understands the importance of good intention. He has stated in interviews that he is “wedded” to results and will accept any strategy which delivers them.

He has also held private meetings with technocrats who have worked in previous administrations. This shows a willingness for him to move beyond ideologies.

His platform is still uneven. The assumptions underlying his housing and grocery plans are flawed.

Recent trials have shown that his transit policy, which supports “free busses for everyone”, has had a limited impact on the economy and is associated with a risk of disruption and reduced service.

It’s also not clear whether Mamdani supporters will be willing to compromise when he takes office.

It is not clear whether New York bureaucracy or political opposition will let him deliver on his vision.

The test of a movement

The rise of Zohran mamdani is more than a race. This indicates that the Democratic Party is going through a major generational change and is challenging centrist ideology.

It is clear from his success that the democratic socialist movement has evolved into a political force.

Now comes the most challenging phase of success: governance.

Brandon Johnson of Chicago, another DSA-backed Mayor, has learned that when faced with budget cuts and legislative opposition, rhetoric quickly falls apart.

Johnson’s popularity has plummeted, and his many plans are either stalled or have failed.

Mamdani’s future will be scrutinized even more. His supporters expect transformation. His critics expect failure. There is a small margin of error.
