On Monday, the Dassault Falcon 900EX – described as Venezuela’s Air Force One – was taken from Dominican Republic to Florida.

US officials said that the acquisition of the plane was a violation against US sanctions, as well as other criminal activity. This bold action is part of the ongoing crackdown by the Maduro government.

This seizure was part of an broader US campaign to combat what the US views as corruption within Venezuela’s government.

Maduro has primarily used the aircraft for state visits abroad and to travel to Venezuela’s military base. The plane was allegedly bought for $13m through a shell-company and then smuggled from the US by April 2023.

No one is immune to US sanctions

US officials are treating it as an important seizure and signalling that nobody is above US laws, including a president.

Seizing a foreign leader’s aircraft is unprecedented in criminal cases. “We’re sending out a message that nobody is above US sanctions, and no one can be above the law,” said a US official to CNN.

US Attorney General Merrick G. Garland has confirmed the Justice Department is responsible for this seizure. He claims that Maduro’s associates and himself illegally obtained and used the plane.

The action highlights the worsening of the relationship between Venezuela and the United States, as the federal agencies continue to investigate the corrupt practices of the Venezuelan Government.

The US continues to pressurize the Maduro government.

US sanctions have targeted Venezuela’s wealth and financial assets.

The federal agencies Homeland Security Investigations and Bureau of Industry and Security have actively seized luxury cars and other assets that are linked to Venezuelan government.

Venezuela’s situation has also had wider implications on US politics, as millions of Venezuelans have fled the economic collapse in Venezuela and sought refuge in other countries or at the US/Mexico border.

What happens to the aircraft that are seized?

The aircraft, upon its arrival, will be subject to forfeiture procedures, which allow the Venezuelan Government to request its return.

As part of the ongoing US investigation into Maduro’s corruption, US officials will also collect evidence on board this plane.

The Dominican Republic was crucial in the facilitation of the seize, alerting Venezuela to the actions, and raising awareness about the increasing international effort to hold Maduro accountable.

The US is increasing pressure on Maduro’s regime, in addition to targeting his financial assets, to disclose data about the presidential elections.

In response to its view that the elections in Venezuela were not fair or competitive, the US government expressed concern about Maduro’s credibility and reimposed sanctions against Venezuela’s oil and natural gas industry.

In early 2018, the US Justice Department accused Maduro, as well as several Venezuelan officials, of narcoterrorism, drug trafficking and corruption.

According to the charges, Maduro and Colombian guerrillas conspired to flood US communities with cocaine.

Maduro’s plane was seized by US authorities as part of a long list of measures taken against Venezuelan leaders.

State Department offers up to 15 million dollars for any information that leads to Maduro being arrested or convicted, highlighting further the US effort to bring him before justice.

The seizure and targeting of illicit Venezuelan activities by US agencies continues. Maduro’s plane is a sign of the growing rift that exists between both nations.

The seizure of Venezuelan assets is a reminder to the Venezuelan people about the chaos that has gripped their country. This has led to a widespread economic crisis and displaced more than 7.7 millions people.
