The Trump Administration announced on May 27, 2025 that it would no longer schedule new interviews with international students seeking visas to study in America.

The Secretary of State Marco Rubio has directed this decision as part of an initiative that will expand the screening of social media for visa applications, in response to national security concerns.

This move is causing immediate alarm among international students and advocates for immigration, as they fear that it will disrupt US higher education and the substantial contributions to US economy.

In recent years, the United States is a popular destination for students from around the world. Over 1 million international students have been hosted in this country annually.

The Institute of International Education estimates that these students spend approximately $44 Billion in the US on tuition, living costs, and other related expenses.

For foreigners wishing to pursue academic, vocational or exchange programs, student visas are essential.

According to several media reports the Trump Administration issued a directive May 27, 2025, halting the scheduling of interviews for new student visas and exchange visas.

The State Department will now be able to expand the social media screening process.

State Department spokeswoman emphasized that it is important to thoroughly vet individuals who enter the country and align the policy with national security goals.

The sudden cancellation of the program has put thousands of students on hold, as they are unable to submit their applications.

This policy is also tied to the criticism that President Trump has been hurling at universities for failing to combat antisemitism.

Impact on universities and students

This decision could cause a delay in processing visas for many international students who plan to start their studies during the next academic year.

This could lead to missed deadlines for enrollment, lost funds from deposits that are non-refundable, or even disruption of academic plans.

Experts in immigration warn that long delays and uncertainty may discourage students from selecting the US for their study destination. Instead, they might choose countries such as Canada, Australia or the United Kingdom which offer more welcoming policies.

The universities are also facing significant financial consequences.

Many institutions rely on international students as a major source of revenue. They often pay the full amount for tuition, without having access to any federal aid.

Reactions to the stoppage

Response to the visa interview suspension has been rapid and mostly critical.

Associations like the American Council on Education have raised alarm about the timing of the new policy and the lack of consultation.

Students’ advocacy groups claim that social media screening is a privacy concern and may disproportionately impact applicants of certain backgrounds or regions. This could lead to unfair practices.

Users of social media sites like X express a mixture of fear and frustration, highlighting how the futures for students could be destroyed and what impact this would have on US higher education.

These posts, while not conclusive evidence, do highlight the concern of affected communities.

Supporters of the Administration’s policy claim that increased vetting will protect national security. This is the same argument used by the State Department.
