In the summer of 2017, companies that store cryptocurrencies in treasury as assets became major players on the market for digital assets.
These names were flooded by investors during the bitcoin slump. They bet on their long-term potential.
The rally is now fading in August. This week’s Jackson Hole Symposium of the Federal Reserve could be a catalyst to rekindle momentum.
Some of these stocks may gain traction depending on central bank messaging regarding rates and the economic climate.
High-profile sponsors of winners
Ethzilla is a former Biotech company that now focuses on ether accumulation. It leads the group, with an average gain month-to date of 114%, after it announced its strategy on July 29.
BitMine Immersion Technologies (also focused on ether) has seen the second largest rise in this month. It was followed by Solana Holding Company DeFi Development Corp.
Several firms have been able to survive the recession with help from well-known investors.
BitMine Immersion’s credibility grew when Tom Lee, the chairman of Fundstrat Global Advisors in June became chairman. This was shortly after billionaire Peter Thiel revealed a stake worth 9%. Thiel added 7.5% to his stake in Ethzilla.
Michael Bucella is the co-founder of Neoclassic Capital and its managing partner. He says that large investors extend their good reputation to these vehicles. This gives investors confidence that they will be operating as legitimate companies.
The ATM programme allows firms to obtain more digital assets by raising significant amounts of money.
Steve Kurz, the global head of Asset Management at Galaxy Digital, emphasized management quality.
He said that those firms that are able to raise capital from the correct partners and with the best business models, along with the most qualified management teams, have the greatest chance of reaching escape velocity.
Ether-focused strategys outperform
Overall, companies that focused more on ether than bitcoin saw better returns.
The success of Circle’s IPO, passage of the GENIUS Act, which provides a framework to regulate stablecoins and the surge in institutional interest for stablecoins (most of them run on Ethereum) are all factors that contributed to this outperformance.
Bit Digital has had only modest success since it switched from mining bitcoins to ether and staked treasury in June.
The shares of the company have risen 11% in value since its announcement, but they are down 6.5% for this month.
DeFi Development, which is based in Solana, has experienced spectacular growth, with a rise of 2,600%, since it announced its strategy 7 April. This return was nearly as high as Strategy, the company who pioneered bitcoin Treasury Strategy 2020.
DeFi Development was still up by 8% in August, despite the wider cooling.
Early pioneers have had mixed fortunes
Strategy, the most well-known Bitcoin treasury, has fallen by around 16% in this month, despite their long-term successes since 2020.
Some latecomers are seeing mixed results. CEA Industries is a Canadian company which announced plans to acquire Binance Coin in July. The price of Binance Coin surged by 550% on the 28th July, but then dropped 28% during August.
