Four major artificial-intelligence developers have been awarded contracts by the US Department of Defense. Alphabet Inc.’s Google, OpenAI and Anthropic PBC as well as Elon Musk’s xAI are part of a strategy to speed up the adoption of advanced AI technology by the military.
This announcement by the Pentagon’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office marks an important step in deepening collaboration between federal and private sectors on AI.
The CDAO did not disclose the contract value, but stated that the agreement has a maximum of $200 million. This could total $800,000,000 for the four companies.
The contracts are intended to support “agenttic AI workflows”, which will enhance the capabilities of warfighting and intelligence operations, as well as enterprise operations.
Doug Matty is the head of CDAO and he stressed the importance of integrating AI commercial solutions in the defense ecosystem. Matty stated that integrating commercially-available solutions with an integrated capability approach would accelerate the adoption of advanced AI in our Joint Mission Essential Tasks.
Understand the government’s first-commercial approach
These contracts are part of a larger shift by the Department of Defense to a commercial-first procurement strategy, which is designed to accelerate the adoption of advanced technologies.
Through a partnership between the General Services Administration and other federal agencies, this approach allows them to use the same AI-based tools.
xAI is the AI company founded by Elon Musk. On the same day, it announced that “Grok for Government”, a set of AI products including the Grok 4 flagship model, was being launched. This suite includes AI models tailored for federal, state and local government entities, as well as national security agencies.
This initiative aims to expand the company’s presence in the public sector, as AI is becoming increasingly important to the national infrastructure and security strategies.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a platform known for its $200 million contract, was already signed last month.
The Pentagon says that the agreement involves the development of prototype AI frontier capabilities designed specifically to address key national security issues in battlefields and enterprise environments.
Growing AI Integration in Federal Policy Changes
In recent months the US government has become increasingly interested in AI, driven both by policy initiatives and regulatory change.
In April, a White House directive promoting the use of AI by federal agencies was issued.
Recently, Donald Trump has revoked an executive order from 2023 that was introduced by the Biden Administration and had mandated stricter AI supervision through mandatory data disclosing.
This revocation is a step towards a more relaxed regulatory framework that will encourage the development of AI-based solutions faster.
These contracts come as AI acquisition practices are increasingly scrutinized.
As Musk’s Grok gained popularity among federal users, Elizabeth Warren expressed concern in May about ensuring a competitive procurement process within the DoD.
The Pentagon is now officially partnering up with top AI names, and the public sector will play an important role in shaping emerging technologies.
These contracts will lay the groundwork for the future integration of AI in defence and beyond.
