The most popular financial search terms in 2024 were inflation, which reflected widespread concerns about the economy. Other topics of interest included tariffs, splits and stock prices, as well as cryptocurrencies.
Investopedia recently released its annual “Terms Of The Year” report, which highlights the top ten topics in finance that attracted readers to the platform.
The top ranking was inflation, which highlighted a year in which rising prices and slowed economic growth were at the forefront of public discussion.
Caleb Silver said, “The topic was on everyone’s mind and it even influenced presidential elections,” during an interview with The Claman Countdown.
Consumers felt the pinch despite the falling inflation rate, as prices of goods were still high, which fueled further searches about the subject.
As trade policy became an election hot topic, tariffs, ranked second, gained in momentum.
Following Donald Trump’s election, discussions about tariffs have exploded. Many people link the subject to possible price increases and economic changes under Trump.
Nvidia stock splits and Nvidia garner market interest
Nvidia’s shares, which will increase by 185% between now and 2024, secured third place on the list.
Stock splits and the chipmaker’s excellent financial performance over the summer, as well as a much-anticipated split of its shares that was widely anticipated contributed to this buzz. “Stock split” ranked fourth in Google searches.
Investors were glued to Nvidia because of its leadership in artificial-intelligence and semiconductors.
The importance of debt, saving, and cryptocurrency
As a result of the US National Debt crossing $36 trillion, “National debt” has been pushed to fifth place. This reflects growing concerns over fiscal policy as well as economic stability.
The top three topics Americans were looking for financial guidance on included: “homeowners’ insurance”, “student loans forgiveness” and “high yield savings accounts”. These topics ranked 6th, 7th and 8th, respectively.
Bitcoin was ranked ninth and showed a renewed interest in cryptocurrency as markets began to recover in the second half of 2018.
Silver said that new crypto investors have entered the market following the election, attracted by “a less regulated environment” as well as a growing optimism for digital assets.
Financial trends and sports betting converge
The “moneyline” bet rounded out the list, reflecting the increasing overlap between political betting and financial markets.
As betting markets were more accurate during the Presidential Election than polls, this term became popular.
Silver’s predictions for the future include that trade policy, tariffs and Trump administration economic policies will continue to be dominant financial topics.
In addition, due to the increased interest in capital markets and cryptocurrencies, 2025 will be an exciting year for investors.
