Vitalik Buterin says that the rise of AI means crypto privacy can no longer be ignored – here’s why

In the face of AI, the founder of Ethereum (ETH), the most popular smart contract platform, argues for the privacy of crypto.

Vitalik Buterin writes in a blog that the privacy issue is becoming more important as AI bots become better at scraping information.

Ethereum’s co-founder claims that the technologies of zero-knowledge proofs (ZK), fully homomorphic cryptography (FHE) & obfuscation are better than the 1990s cypherpunks ever imagined.

Privacy is no longer an option. AI increases the capabilities of centralized data analysis and collection while also expanding our voluntary sharing. Newer technologies, such as brain-computer interactions, will pose new challenges in the future: AI may literally be able to read our minds. We have much more effective tools for protecting privacy in digital world than 1990s cryptopunks ever imagined.

Without privacy, it’s a battle to see what other people think (and the bots), powerful people, businesses, peers and people in today’s world and tomorrow’s. Privacy allows us to maintain a healthy balance. This balance is rapidly being eroded today, particularly in the physical world. The default path for modern techno-capitalism is to further erode this balance, as it is hungry for business models which find ways of capturing value without users having to pay explicitly for products.

Buterin, who supports some privacy restrictions for powerful people or large companies, says the greater risk to privacy is for ordinary citizens.

“Society’s success has always been dependent on the balance of privacy and openness. Sometimes, I’m also in favor of privacy limits.

The most important challenge of our time is to support privacy for everyone and make the necessary tools open-source, universal, reliable and safe. Supporting privacy and making tools that are open-source and universally reliable, safe and secure is one of today’s most important challenges.
