U.S. vice president Kamala Harris accepted the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination for 2024, setting up a high stakes race against the former President Donald Trump.

Harris promises unity and progress

Harris didn’t hold back in criticizing Donald Trump, her opponent. She warned that he could “pull back our country” and accused him of wanting to do so.

Vice President Biden also used the occasion to express his gratitude, praising President Biden’s ‘extraordinary record’ and ‘inspiring character’. Biden publicly endorsed Harris, and Tim Walz, her running mate. He had given an emotional goodbye speech to the convention.

Democratic Convention Highlights
Harris’s speech of acceptance capped a convention that was marked both by high-profile endorsements as well as controversy. Bill Clinton and Barack and Michelle Obama have both emphasized that Harris faces a difficult fight against Trump.
Protests outside the convention centre have attracted attention as well, protesters opposing U.S. backing for Israel’s action in Gaza.

Former President Trump, in response to Harris’s speech on Twitter, criticized her remarks, asking ‘why had she not addressed the topics she criticised’.
