BonV Aero is a startup based in Odisha (east India), a company that specializes in drone manufacturing.
BonV is the first Indian company to have won the international startup competition Meet the Drapers, in which aspiring founders of startups from around the globe get the chance to present their business ideas to Tim Draper.
Draper, who usually only grants $1 million per winner to winners of the tournaments, made an exception for this one.
The investment was made on top of a previous fundraising effort of Rs6 crore (roughly $693,188), which had been led by IPV Ventures.
In the next five-year period, the company aims to reach a turnover of more than $100 million and wants Odisha to become an aviation hub for the nation.
Its high-profile clients, including the Indian Army and State disaster forces, is another factor which sets it apart.
Air Orca, and other innovations planned
BonV has recently released AirOrca, India’s first fully-autonomous logistics drone capable of transporting 15-20 kg payload on violent terrains at 18,000 ft.
BonV has developed a drone that can carry 50kg of payload. The Indian Army is using the platform for logistical supplies in high-altitude areas, particularly during winter.
With a payload of 15 to 20 kilograms, it is only possible to supply a small amount, while they must transport large quantities like ammunition and kerosene. This is the project our team is currently working on in partnership with Indian Army. “We say partnership, because the Indian army is also providing us with Rs 10 crore in grant money to help develop a platform that can hold 50 kg,” Gaurav Ahha, BonV co-founder, said ICD.
Achha, who said that no one else in the market has built a platform of this size, will have designed its airframe and propulsion systems in-house.
Air Orca, an autonomous drone, offers a practical solution for logistics in the modern world. Its reach, flexibility and reliability can be used for a variety of applications, from high-altitude defense operations to disaster response. “With the hurricanes that hit the US in recent memory, I expect BonV Aero’s innovative technology to be an effective disaster response tool in India and worldwide,” Draper said during the event. Draper flew in for the AirOrca launch in Bhubhaneshwar in 2013.
BonV Aero sights the UK and US
Does BonV want to expand internationally? A renowned Silicon Valley Investor has already invested heavily in the company.
We are an international company. Accha says, “We are Make in India to the benefit of all.”
Satyabrata Satapathy is CEO and cofounder of BonV Aero. He told ICD that the co-founders of BonV Aero are in the process of understanding how the US Department of Defense works and they are looking at it as a possible partner. The company also belongs to the UK’s “Royal Navy Framework”.
BonV has now been invited to participate in the Unmanned Aerial System Heavy Lift Capability Framework (UASHLC), led by UK Ministry of Defence. This will allow BonV to work with UK and NATO nations.
Satapathy states that the company expects to start receiving commercial orders in the UK from 2026, after obtaining the required certifications and having already started the construction there.

In the past year, the share price of companies that manufacture electric vertical takeoff-and-landing (eVTOL), such as Joby Aviation, Archer Aviation, and others has risen by respectively 39% and 84%.
Some others, like Lilium in Germany, have had difficulty achieving their goals.
Air taxis are still a relatively new concept in India. However, there has been a report that Indigo and Archer Aviation have partnered to provide air taxis between Delhi and Gurgaon.
Is it a natural next step to enter the air taxi market for BonV?
BonV Aero’s vision for the future is aerial transportation of people and goods. Satapathy states that “goods already happen right now, and people need them.”
Aerial taxis such as Lilium, Archer and Joby Aviation are aiming to use the low-airspace economy, which is below 300 metres (or 300 feet) at present. We plan to achieve this by creating research parks in the area. This will help us to gain a better understanding on how to commercialise and exploit this low airspace.
India’s Deep Tech Ecosystem: Challenges it faces
BonV Aero belongs to India’s deep-tech ecosystem. This has witnessed increased investments and innovations in drones, AI, and quantum computing.
The Indian drone market, according to estimates, is set to reach $3 billion by 2030.
Tracxn reports that there are 478 drone startup companies in India. Of these, 130 have been funded. This is partly due to government assistance in the form Production Linked Investment scheme, which provides financial support for producers.
In its annual budget for 2024, the Indian Government also set up a corpus worth Rs. 1 lakh crore, with loans of fifty years interest free, to encourage private companies to increase their research and innovations in the sunrise fields.
Experts have stated that the lack of an effective implementation has kept this scheme from reaching its goal.
Satapathy says, “The problems arise because there is no single widow system.”
It is difficult to understand the benefits of technology and explain them. When you interact with bureaucrats, the idea can get buried in files.
The people aren’t empowered. The people are not empowered. The problem isn’t with the individual, but rather the post that has not used such power in the past. The PM should empower people who are capable of making bold decisions.
Satapathy also encouraged local governments to build parks with the plant and equipment that is often costly to purchase and maintain but necessary for the advancement of the innovation process.
Achha adds: “It’d be helpful if customs were waived on R&D items that come from overseas.”
