  • The case escalated when physical evidence led the authorities to treat it as a kidnapping.

  • Bitcoin ransom demands remain unconfirmed, with no contact confirmed from a real captor.

  • FBI investigation continues without naming any suspects and a reward of $50,000 is offered.

Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, the 84 year old mother of Savannah Guthrie has escalated to a suspected kidnapping case as law enforcement examines unverified reports of a Bitcoin-based ransom. Investigators have said that the case is still active. There is no proof of life or communication from a kidnapper.

Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her home near Tucson, Arizona after her family members last saw the woman on the evening of the 31st January. The next morning, when she did not attend church, her family became increasingly concerned. Her phone, wallet and car were all left behind.

SAVANNAH GUTHRIE MOM DISAPPEARS, AUTHORITIES CALLS IT AN ABDUCTION

Arizona authorities now treat the sudden disappearance 84-year old Nancy Guthrie – mother of NBC anchor Savannah Guthrie – as an outright kidnapping from her Tucson area home.

Deputies who responded to the scene found blood spatter on the front door of her home. Later, forensic testing confirmed that the blood was Nancy Guthrie’s. Authorities then elevated the case from being a missing person report to one of suspected kidnapping. Investigators determined that the doorbell camera in the home had been removed or disabled.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is assisting the Pima County Sheriff’s Department in the investigation. Officials have said that they have not identified any suspects, and are continuing to evaluate all available evidence.

Bitcoin Ransom Messages Under Review

Investigative efforts took a new direction after media outlets received ransom communications that referred to Bitcoin payments and provided a cryptocurrency wallet’s address. Reports described demands of millions of dollars worth of Bitcoin, with multiple deadlines.

Authorities have not verified the authenticity of any ransom notes. Investigators have stressed that no verified captive has contacted the family. The Bitcoin ransom element is still under active review and remains unproven.

Separate Crypto Scam Arrest

In a separate but related development, law enforcement arrested Derrick Callella. A California man was accused of sending fraudulent Bitcoin messages to family members of Guthrie. Officials said that Callella was acting independently and not connected to the disappearance.

Savannah Guthrie, who was a host on Today until the search began, has now stepped down from her duties. The FBI announced at a press conference that it would pay $50,000 for information leading to Nancy Guthrie’s rescue or arrest of those responsible.
