According to a recent report, Chinese hackers sponsored by the Chinese government have compromised hundreds of devices in the US Treasury Department.
Bloomberg reports that the attackers accessed the computers of 400 people at the Treasury Department, including Treasury Sec. Janet Yellen. Bloomberg cites two sources familiar with the situation.
Early investigations have revealed that employee passwords and usernames, as well as at least 3,500 unclassified documents were compromised.
According to reports, Yellen’s computer had less than 50 files accessed. The email system and classified systems of the department were also not compromised.
Hackers appeared to have been searching for information about sanctions and international issues.
The data also included information on investigations that were ongoing at the Committee on Foreign Investment (CFI), an interagency group which reviews foreign investment in US companies to determine potential risks for national security.
Treasury Department discovered breach following a BeyondTrust Corp. warning.
On December 8, the access management company notified Treasury of the exploitation of its network.
Chinese officials have denied any involvement with this or other claims of cyberattacks by the state.
