The healthcare company has settled a lawsuit for millions of dollars over the data breach which exposed sensitive patient information.
The settlement administrator’s website reports that Essen Medical Associates, a New York-based healthcare organization, has paid $4 million in order to settle a lawsuit filed by hackers who gained access to its network.
This data breach affected 907 782 current and former patients.
An investigation by Essen found that between March 14, 2023 and March 22, 2023 an unauthorised actor may have gained access to or copied information within the Essen system…
“The information contained in affected files varied depending on the individual and included, as appropriate, names of individuals, social security numbers, drivers’ licenses or state identification numbers, US Alien registration number, non US identification number and passport number. It also included, as applicable: financial account information and health insurance details, laboratory results, medical records, medical treatments, patient accounts, patient identification numbers, physicians, prescription information and medical history.”
Members of the settlement class are entitled to up to $5,000 in compensation for losses that were documented as a direct result of the breach.
A $100 alternative payment will be made to class members who do not have to prove their losses.
By May 4, you must object to any settlement. By June 1, all claims must be filed. The final hearing in the case is scheduled for 7th July.
