According to a US healthcare company, 626 540 Americans have been affected by cyberattacks and data breaches.
ApolloMD revealed the number through a recent filing to the Department of Health and Human Services Office.
Georgia-based firm provides multispecialty and physician practice management services to medical practices and hospitals in 18 states.
According to , the firm became aware of this breach in May last year after it detected unusual activities on its network.
A thorough investigation has revealed that an unauthorised party may have accessed or acquired patient files containing information about patients treated by affiliated doctors and practices of the firm.
Data at risk include names, addresses and dates of birth. Also included are diagnoses, names of providers, dates of services, details of treatment, health insurance, as well as information about treatments. Some individuals’ Social Security Numbers were compromised.
ApolloMD has started to send notification letters to patients affected by the breach on September 17. It also offers free credit monitoring to anyone whose Social Security number may have been compromised.
According to the firm, it has enhanced its security protocols and taken additional measures in order to prevent another incident of this nature from occurring.
