Suspect in $73,000 Chase Bank Impersonation Scam Goes Missing After Judge Releases Him

Police have launched a new search for a man accused of taking part in a Chase Bank impersonation scam that cost a grocery store worker $73,000.

Breider Iriarte Campomar failed to show up for court after a Cook County judge released him under pretrial conditions, reports ABC7 Chicago.

Police found Campomar in Pennsylvania in early October and had him extradited to Cook County, Illinois, where he was charged with theft by deception, a Class 2 felony.

A new warrant has been issued, and his location is unknown.

Two other men named as suspects, Jose Luis Mateo and Fredduar Escobar Bautista, are also still at large.

The victim, Mariano’s worker David Lipsky, says the scheme started with a call that appeared to come from a Chase number, warning him that his account was compromised and that he needed to move his money to a safe account.

Another caller who claimed to work for Chase later told him federal authorities were involved, and Lipsky transferred $73,000.

Lipsky says he was thrilled when he heard police had found Campomar, but the release has left him doubting he will see justice.

Says Lipsky,

“I jumped for joy when he called me and I said ‘Hey everybody. He’s got a suspect! Finally, we’re going to get restitution’… I am very upset and very mad…

Should have held him in custody until his hearing. I need that money back, and I need him to pay for what he did.”

Palatine police say detectives have spent considerable time and resources on the case, including working with out-of-state law enforcement to find Campomar.

As The ICD previously reported, about $24,000 was later returned to Lipsky’s account.

Anyone with information is asked to call Palatine police at 847-359-9000.
