  • Dr. Gavin Wood, creator of Polkadot, announces the JAM graypaper 0.4 version’s incorporation of “Ordered Acumulation.”

  • The Polkadot Virtual Machine will be upgraded from 32-bits to 64-bits.

  • The launch of Polkadot’s elastic expansion is expected in February 2025.

Dr. Gavin Wood revealed major advancements in the Join-Accumulate Machine at the recent Polkadot Fellowship Meeting. The “Ordered accumulation” is now included in Version 0.4 of JAM gray paper, a critical update that is the final core protocol improvement before v1.0.

Polkadot explained that JAM is a “prospective design to succeed the relay chains.” CoreJAM stands for Collect, Refine, Join, Accumulate. CoreJAM was first described in an RFC document by Gavin Wood. It details the computation model that the machine embodies.

JAM is a decentralized data lake that aims to revolutionize computing by solving the problem of “sharding islands”. This allows for efficient data modifications and reuse across work packages. It is superior to existing models such as the Polkadot Relay Chain and Ethereum.

The “Ordered Accumulations” feature allows sequential processing of work packages between blocks, especially if output data from one package depends on another. This leads to reliable and efficient calculations.

The meeting also highlighted possible refinements planned for JAM. This includes field additions and optimizations of operations to boost performance. The Polkadot virtual machine (PVM) is also undergoing a significant upgrade, from 32-bits to 64-bits, promising substantial improvements in data handling and processing power.

Fellowship member Andrei Sandu also shared an exciting roadmap update on Polkadot. He said that Polkadot’s elastic expansion will launch in January or Febraury 2025. This launch is the final step to completing Polkadot 2.0. Polkadot 2.0 will be released in its entirety within the same timeframe.
