Oklahoma Family Loses Access to $50,000 as Cashier’s Check Vanishes in Mail

A family in Oklahoma is unable to access $50,000 after a cashier’s check they mailed through the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) disappeared before reaching its intended recipient.

Jamie Oaks says the check was sent but never arrived, leaving the funds tied up as they navigate the USPS process, reports Oklahoma News 4.

She says the family is looking to use the funds to buy a new home after recently relocating to Texas.

“My husband’s grandmother passed away several years ago, and she had 80 acres in Minco, and that was left to my husband’s father, obviously, and he decided that he wanted to sell it and just split the money.”

Tracking data shows the check was slated for delivery on Monday, June 15th.

“Monday came and went. We didn’t get anything. So, we went to the local post office here in Orange Grove, Texas, and I talked to the lady there, she ran a search of the tracking number.”

According to the postal worker and the tracking data, the check’s last known location was at a distribution center in Oklahoma City.

“They can put a stop pay on it, but it’s basically just cash that’s out there. They said if they reissued a new one, that my in-laws would be on the hook for the next seven years if someone else tried cashing that first check that’s just out there floating.”

The last tracking update was about 30 days ago, and the Oaks family has been completing missing mail reports and reaching out to customer service in an effort to locate the check. Oaks says the process has been “frustrating.”

The USPS says it is still on the lookout for the missing check. Says USPS’s Becky Hernandez,

“Providing efficient, dependable, and affordable service is of paramount importance to the U.S. Postal Service, and we strive to provide exceptional service with each delivery. Unfortunately, on rare occasions an item may not successfully reach its destination. In this specific case, local postal management is aware of the issue, and we continue to research and make every effort to locate the mail piece. Postal officials will continue to communicate directly with the customer to provide further updates. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and remain committed to resolving the matter.”
