It also gives Nu, which serves more than 140 million customers worldwide, a broader role in cross-border payments.

Nu U.S. Launch Adds Deposits, Cards and Transfers

Nu launched its U.S. services through Lead Bank, which provides regulated banking and card infrastructure. Nu remains a financial technology company rather than a bank, while eligible deposits held by Lead Bank receive FDIC insurance within legal limits.

The Nu Account offers a variable 3.50% annual percentage yield, with interest calculated and credited daily. Customers also receive a limited-edition metal debit card and access to fee-free domestic transfers.

Meanwhile, Nu’s World Elite Mastercard credit card charges no annual fee and offers unlimited 1.5% cashback. Nu plans to introduce a 2% cashback rate for qualifying customers. It also expects to offer a 4.50% APY savings goal on balances up to $10,000. However, those enhanced rates were not broadly available at launch.

International transfers will initially connect the U.S. with Brazil, Mexico and Colombia. Nu has not provided a complete timetable for adding other markets.

Nu Global Uses USDC and EURC for Payments

Nu Global operates separately from the Lead Bank account. It converts customer funds into Circle-issued USDC or EURC, allowing users to transfer money across more than 35 countries. USDC balances earn an advertised 3.50% APY, while EURC balances earn 2.20%. Both variable rates accrue daily, although Nu has not guaranteed how long they will remain available.

The account also includes a virtual Mastercard for international purchases. Nu says customers can spend at market exchange rates without an additional foreign-exchange markup, subject to local availability and product terms.

Stablecoin Service Targets Cross-Border Payment Costs

Nu Global initially focuses on payment networks connecting Europe and Latin America. Future integrations will link the service with Nu’s operations in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and the United States. The account moves USDC and EURC via digital payment infrastructure rather than relying solely on correspondent banking networks.

This structure can shorten settlement times and eliminate some transfer charges, although local currency conversion and withdrawal access still depend on the availability of payment systems. Nu’s customer base could expose stablecoin payments to a wider retail audience. However, adoption will depend on each market’s launch schedule, regulations and access conditions.
